This book is more than my 3rd portfolio, but a collection of moments I have achieved and conquered as a designer. Having such an array of unique classes helped challenged my creative process and allowed me learn so many new skills. I used my work this year as an escape from the unfortunate events I faced personally and as I look back to see my growth, I’m over joyed with happiness knowing I’m not the same designer I was seven months ago. I didn’t allow my sorrow and pain to cloud my progress and slow me down from reaching this point in my career. I hope you can understand, I am an artist and this book is more than my 3rd year portfolio but collection of pieces of me.
Charlotte Brontë was an English novelist and poet, the eldest of the three Brontë sisters who survived into adulthood and whose novels have become classics of English literature. She first published her works (including her best known novel, Jane Eyre) under the pen name Currer Bell.
Charlotte Brontë is a classic and well known author writing her novels around the late 1800’s. I wanted to capture the style of the era, while still having a refreshing modern feel to the design of the covers. I came across a handful of old maps called Sanborn maps.
Sanborn Maps was a creator and publisher of maps of US cities and towns. The Sanborn Maps were originally created for assessing fire insurance liability in urbanized areas in the United States.
THE HIP HOP HONORS is an annual event that airs on VH1. The television special honors old school and golden age hip hop rappers and contributors for their long-term influence and importance in the history of hip hop culture. It features live performances by most of the honorees along with new school artists who have been influenced by them in tribute.
I was inspired by 1970’s color blocks and bold font style. I wanted the posters to honor the females of hip hop without using over sexualize imagery so it can focuse in on the talents of these women.
BAUS - Winter 2017 : Vol 1
MISSON: To give the well rounded modern female readers everything they need to elevate and add to their life.
TARGET READERS: She is independent, juggles family, friends, and work all at once. She is interested in growing and learning, always curious, enjoys travel, serious about her health and wants to be connected to the world. Make your mouth water with places to visit that’s all about good taste.
For this packagaing project I wanted to target the candy loving adults.
I designed the box to be upright, so it would be easy to place on any surface as well as open and grab at your conveince.
The design is a vectored watercolor floral pattern with juicy fruit floating all around it. To keep a sophistocated approch with the package I left the graphic black and what and created a monogram logo.
The company was founded in 1886 by the De Cecco brothers in the small town of Fara San Martino in the Abruzzo region of central Italy. Nicola De Cecco originally produced flour at his stone mill before establishing the pasta factory.
The concept and important of famiy was the inspiration of my package re-design. I want it to look like your grand mothers favorite top of the line itailan pasta.
SHE IS __
is a campaign focused on changing the perception of societies views on women. Although we are starting this movement within our communities, our goal is to spread change worldwide.
TO HELP BUILD OUR WOMAN UP INSTEAD OF BREAKING THEM DOWN.
A multi-channel print and digital campaign that solicits action(s) and engagement from an audience.
OBJECTIVES: To figure out what actions I want my target audience to take, what I want them to gain from it and what will be achieved by a successful campaign
PART I: POSTER
To design a poster that guides someone through the step-by-step process of how to do something.
Giving clear instructions is an important tool in communication. In this assignment I developed and designed a set of visual instruction that break a complex process down into digestible steps.
My “How-To” poster is inspired by my daily curly hair routine. It took me years to figure out how to manage my hair, so I felt that it was the perfect subject for a poster of my choice. Having curly hair requires skill and creativity when trying to handle its craziness. In this “How-To” I broke down my process into 6 basic steps to start any hair style that requires no heat.
After creating a “ How-To” Poster we had to find an app that would associate with our poster seamlessly and redesign the structure and design elements of it to improve its function and purpose.
Vosges specializes in exquisite truffles infused with odd ingredients: Jamaican beer, wasabi, and wild-fennel pollen. What to try: The “Rooster Truffle”—dark chocolate with Taleggio cheese.
For this project, I redesigned the company’s logo and packaging textile. This new design compliments the exquisitely made truffles.
For my sophomore year portfolio, I wanted to go with a concept that reflected my ethnic culture and identity as a designer. My parents who are both first generation Americans, raised me to know/ be aware of where I came from. My father was Haitian and my mother is Puerto Rican; with the two combined, I identify as Caribbean. Throughout the years of practicing and studying art and culture, I have always been drawn to the Art Deco style.
This style is not only found in my home city of New York City, but in multiple places of the Caribbean islands including Havana, Cuba and San Juan, Puerto Rico. The island’s vibrant colors, mixed with the beautiful style of Art Deco is the perfect combination that describes myself as a person and as a graphic designer. I’m very inspired by Cuban and Puerto Rican graphic posters, architecture and history. I enjoy creating work that’s not only sophisticated and vibrant but detailed and conveys a message; whether it be personal, political, etc.
Cigars, a staple in the Caribbean culture and also a staple with my family, are smoked at social gatherings and special occasions. Accomplishing my first year at the School of Visual Arts is a special occasion for myself considering the prior struggles I have overcame to get to where I currently am in life. I find it very fitting to display my sophomore portfolio in none other than a cigar box that contains my best work from a great first year as an SVA student.
“Sinfonetta” is a very expressive and festive large orchestra piece created by Czech composer Leoš Janáček. The piece is based on five movements, all in which have descriptive subtitles.
Allegratto- Allegro Maestoso (Fanfare)
Andante- Allegretto (The Castle, Brno )
Moderato- ( The Queens Monastery, Brno )
Allegretto-( The Street Leading to the castle)
Andante con moto (The Town Hall, Brno)
The creation of the piece was inspired by his wife and later dedicated to the Czechoslovak Army. Janáček intended for the pieces to express “contemporary free man, spiritual beauty, strength, courage and determination to fight”.
For my first design, I wanted to use natural elements of strength such as the weather and landscapes to bring across a powerful emotion through visuals. Janáček’s strong piece was inspired by none other than his wife; because of this, my second design is focused on showing the strengths of a woman. The die-cut design and gold accents connect to the visuals of Janáček’s orchestra, which contains a large number of woodwinds and strings.
For this assignment, we were given a list of Directors from “ The Criterion Collection” to choose from. We had to challenge ourselves by creating movie posters without using the computer for one of their movies. I chose the legendary director, Akira Kurosawa and his movie “Kagemusha”. “Kagemusha” is a samurai movie about a petty thief with an utter resemblance to a samurai warlord, and is hired as the lords double. When the warlord dies, the thief is forced to take arms in his own hands.
I created letters using Helvetica and played around and rearranged their placement until I was content. To achieve the sense of movement, I played around with the xerox and paint smears.
I created silhoettes played around and rearranged their placement until I was content. To achieve the sense of doubling, I played around with the xerox and pattered paper.
We were assigned to read “Noone belongs here more than you” by Miranda July; a book written and filled with weird short stories. We had to select two stories from the collection and create book covers that embody the stories visually. I chose the stories “Majesty “ and “Kiss a Door”.
My design for “Majesty” reflected how I felt after reading it; which was light headed and confused. The main character had her head up in the clouds for the entire story; worrying about situations that had nothing to do with her causing herself to be “cloudy”.
My design for “Kiss a Door” projected the story’s main character. She was a prisoner of abuse and used her musical talent to escape her everyday demons until music was completely taken from her.
Sophie Calle is a French conceptual artist and writer, who was dumped by her boyfriend via email; instead of crying about it, she created beautiful works of art in light of it. For this spread, I wanted to visually show the concept of her heart being stepped on and left broken. The photographs I chose to include in the article, I feel embody her strength as a woman and as an artist.
For this assignment, we were assigned a designer and had to create a poster that embodied their design aesthetic and one that went against it. I was given Raymond Loewy, an industrial designer who is also known as “ the man who shaped America” or the “father of modern design”. His designs include the Coca Cola bottle, the logos for Shell and Exxon, the Greyhound bus, and S1 Locomotive, amongst many other popular designs.
Type Con is an annual event typographers and type enthusiasts attend. We were assigned to rebrand the event from the logo, to the posters, the tickets and apparel.
